Greater Boston Food Bank / Plant Tour

Event Synopsis

Hunger is no longer just a problem for those in poverty. A recent study shows that 47% of those at risk for hunger in eastern Massachusetts make too much money for government-provided emergency food assistance. One in nine members of our community is at risk of hunger, and that number is expanding. The Greater Boston Food Bank has witnessed a 23% increase in requests for food assistance since 2005. Please join Boston APICS on February 15, 2012 for a tour of The Greater Boston Food Bank, the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. GBFB's mission is to end hunger in eastern Massachusetts, and in fiscal 2012 they will receive and distribute 37 million pounds of food to the 190 communities they serve. We will tour GBFB's state-of-the-art, 117,000 square foot food distribution facility, which has received LEED Silver certification. We will visit their rooftop photovoltaic solar array (weather permitting), tour their warehouse, observe salvage operations, and have time for dinner, networking, and Q&A. Boston APICS encourages all attendees to bring a donation of canned food for entry into a raffle at the end of the tour for a free pass to a future Boston chapter PDM. GBFB is adjacent to the Southeast Expressway at 70 South Bay Ave., and there is free on-site parking. To reserve, please register online right here. Our regular meetings are held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Waltham, MA.  Occasionally meetings are scheduled in other locations.

Members: to receive your membership discount, you'll need your APICS id so have it handy prior to starting the Pay Pal or Credit card registration process.  Pre-paying facilitates the entire accounting process for us, and you'll get an instant receipt from Pay Pal upon registering.

If you choose to pay-at-the-door, please bring cash or check.  There will be an additional $5 handling fee for this service.
